10/4 (FRI) HALF MOON TO APTOS, CA 62.5 MILES

1st morning we left before Jean & Lynn.  Wind at our back–going to be easy day-I should know better.  On HWY 1 most of day–long climbs-sometimes w/no shoulder.  Down hills have crosswinds-holding on for dear life-hands hurt.  Not so worried about climbs anymore-but Armand is still way out in front of me most of the time.  Eat lunch at Davenport-lots of people at café-terrible lunch & service-1 hr wasted.  Get to Santa Cruz-stop & watch surfers.  Lots of surfers standing in water waiting for wave-only baby waves-rides last 15 sec or less.  Keep going along coast-don’t see many places to stay.  Best Western is almost $200-give us a list of other motels in the area.  Go to Safeway & pick up dinner & Aleve. End up at Rio Sands ($150)-Jean & Lynn right behind us.  Eat out on our balcony-have heated pool & hot tub-stay in our room.  Short day tomorrow.

10/3 (THURS) FAIRFAX TO HALF MOON, CA 51 MILES

Ate breakfast-all left together for GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE.  Still had major climbs-but so much easier w/new gears.  GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE is in front of us-another thing Jean can cross off her bucket list.  Only 1 side is open for bikers & pedestrians going both ways-got crowded at times.  Take pictures & find bike route around SF going through parks.  Get on 1 by mistake & almost get run over-jump curb & go back on dirt path.  Eat lunch in Daly City at Subway-no bathroom-tell us to go over to Taco Bell.  Bike near ocean w/winds at our back.  Get to Half Moon & feel like going farther because it’s easy biking.  Talk to Jean & Lynn while Armand goes to bathroom.  Comes back & has FLAT TIRE-call Jean.  Finds us a room at Coastside Inn ($120)-very clean-have 8 pillows (2 beds).  Dinner at Tres Amigos wJean’s nephew & girlfriend-both are in graduate programs at Stanford & have competed in an Ironman-very impressive.  Our son John is training for his 1st Ironman.  Talk to sister Barbara-it’s her b-day today- find out our dog Dominic is being good.
