NEW BERN to PLYMOUTH, NC  73 MILES, 12.1 MPH, 5:57 biking time, 8:00 to 4:30. Roadway Inn ($65)  Different kind of day. Waffles bkft-tv on-news all negative. Make comment about all the nice people we’ve met while biking-how curteous drivers are-how we wave to people & they wave back. Now cross 2 1/2 m bridge-light drizzle-cool. For 70 m rarely saw another car-good rds-farms-baby corn growing-lots of family cemeteries. PHILLIPS STORY. In Aurora pass large industrial plant-pot ash-not pretty. Get to ferry hr early-bathroom warm. Nice ferry ride-warm inside-30 min. 42 m-Bath-hungry-Country Kitchen rest. Eat bbq wrap & fries-OR eats 6 fries & cliff bar. DOG & TURTLE STORY. Sun finally came out-still have wind-music. At 68 miles OR stops-has carrot cake cliff bar-don’t know how he does it. 2 miles stop at 1st store we’ve seen since Bath. Dog running around-trying to find new family. OR bikes off-Roadway Inn-handicapped room. Italian for dinner-OR goes to Piggly Wiggly for cliff bars-McD for smoothie-go back to room to soak. Tomorrow will be along day-OR been asleep for hrs.

JACKSONVILLE to NEW BERN, NC  50 MILES, 13 MPH, 3:50 MIN BIKING TIME  8:45 to 1:00  BridgePoint Hotel $85    Up later, good  bkft-waffles. Short day today-OR does good job getting out of town. See 2 runners-Chris & Paul-nice enough to stop. Paul is planning to RUN east coast in a few yrs-maybe biking doesn’t sound so hard. Back to Adventure Cycling map-back rds very little traffic-some rd very bumpy. 30 miles in Pollocksville-stop at Dollar General for ch mk & apple pie. Man tells us broke his arm biking on rd we plan to take-terrible rd. 2 ladies tells us bikers on rd all the time-other choice 17 w/non stop traffic. Take map rd-100 yds rough-rest of 15 m great. Wind at back, farms, trees, mail boxes-hard up for pictures-nice houses at end. Bike over bridge into New Bern-stop at visitors center. Tell us about BridgePoint Hotel back over bridge & points of interests. Looked way out of our price range-suprised. As OR is checking in-group of 7 bikers from OH come in. They are going south & have been fighting the wind for days. Glad we’re going N-have long bridge & day tomorrow. Clean up & walk over bridge to town. Go to mansion $40-last tour at 4:00-don’t have time to see other houses. Only us for tour-very interesting. 1st 2 gov were appt by king-all materials & craftsman sent from Eng. Burned & rebuilt in 50’s. Near 6:00-getting hungry & whiney. Don’t have time for Pepsi tour. Good dinner of veggie burger & fries. OR wants to see the desserts-wants to get triple ch cake-NO-that’s even too much for me. Brownie comes-start talking to Ben & Judy at next table-I talk-OR eats most of brownie. They bike 15 -20 m a day-that’s a lot more than we bike at home. Walk down to water & back to hotel. Hope to talk to other bikers before ride tomorrow. My favorite town so far.

CAROLINA BEACH to JACKSONVILLE, NC  80 MILES,  14 MPH, 5:43 BT, 7:30-4:00. ECONOLODGE (FREE)  Up at 6:30 but still slow to get out the door. 1 car in lot-the managers. NC very bike friendly-nice bike lanes. Outskirts of Wilmington-huge port-box cars stacked-men climbing up (picture) lots of new construction. Strange-can’t count all the school busses that pass-never see any schools. In town-UT looks at map-takes off-lots of cars. Take picture-by the time I get out-don’t see him. Start biking-fear-hear voice behind me-where are you going? I thought YOU were lost-afraid. UT tells me to stay close-YES, my leader. Wind behind us-on 17 now-no shoulder-lots of traffic going into Hampstead. Now at 42 miles w/no food & drank just a little water. Neither of us ever drink much water. Find Subway-finally. Map rap-need to get off 17 & traffic. Decide to go to Surf City & the beach. After 5 m-have great shoulder-not going to beach. Wind at back-biking at 18 to 24 mph. Make a couple of stops to get out of sun-one can’t go in store because people smoking. Jacksonville-Econolodge-get free night on 3rd stay. Tiger, Sparky & I love our room-very clean. No laundry here-UT walks 5 blocks to do our wash. I soak in tub. Go to Waffle House for dinner-UT gets pecan waffle & a TRIPLE order of hash browns. Cookies for dessert. Miss playing bridge w/my Wed group.
