9/16 (MON) ROCKAWAY TO PACIFIC CITY, OR 42 MILES

Whitney leaves-time for me to get up-7:10-out at 7:40-Jean pokes head out-says good bye-they were going to bkft at Grumpy’s. 2m-jacket comes off–then bk on when rain comes-going to be that kind of day again. Need the bathroom-forced to stop at Smoke House-go in & see donuts. Turns out that they sell Tillamook smoked jerky which is made next door-no tobacco products. Later go by Tillamook Cheese Factory. Rd along coast & climbed mt to Cape Lookout–fantastic views. Then the rain started as we continued to climb-going down-no bike lane. Going down-very scary-raining harder-trying to break to 35mph-can’t see-cars behind me can’t get by. Stopped for chips & Moo Moo Milk-biked 8 last m-cold & wet-still had more climbs. So glad to get to Anchorage Motel ($60) at 1:30. Get to use motel dryer for wet clothes. Mexican food for dinner–see Jean & Lynn ride by–5:30. Left at 9:30 because of rain-took longer route even though sign said rd was out–not much stops Jean-but Lynn had a flat tire which slowed them down a little. Went back to Mex Rest w/trio. Then Armand & I walked 1/2 m to store for ch mk & ch cookies. Tomorrow we will be in NEWPORT for our CROSS COUNTRY REUNION hosted by Georgia. Suppose to rain.

9/15 (SUN) ASTORIA TO ROCKAWAY, OR 54 MILES

GOOD BAD & the UGLY TODAY!!! Up at 7:00 out at 7:20-saw trio bike away-caught them a little later after going over terrible, grated slippery bridge. Changed clothes a lot today-weather-drizzly to start-wear rain jacket & pants. Scenic, no traffic, good country rds-hot on hills-take clothes off. At 20 m get to SEASIDE–meet Ben from Vancouver-he is the GRANOLA KING (his own business) & has GKing biking shirt. Has to go back to work on Mon-carries his bike on his motorcycle. Bike the boardwalk-lots of people-see Lewis & Clark statue-this is where they ended their adventure. Now on 101-lots of traffic, narrow (very)bike lanes-stop at Cannon Beach (30 m) for lunch & get out of rain. Chocolate, banana crepe/chocolate milk/ch donut. Start out of town-run into Jean & Lynn. Go through scary tunnel-narrow-no bike lanes-turn on flashing lights to let cars know bikes in there. Now we get to the UGLY-long mt climb-so foggy that you can’t see 10 ft in front of you-drizzly-wet rds-continual traffic w/bike lane so narrow that you barely have room for tire-hope cars don’t run you down. Downhill is worse on slippery rd. Bottom of hill is Wheeler-fog is completely gone-need to stop. Sit at Garlic Restaurant-closed-comfortable chairs-wait for Jean & Lynn. Sure enough-they see us-change clothes again. 8 m to go-worst is behind us-NO it’s not-Rain again. Completely wet when we get to Sea Haven Motel ($75)-sharing w/Whitney again. Unbelievable deal-kitchen-bunk beds & other room, washer & dryer w/soap supplied-clean-tub for my 30 min bath. Go to Grumpy’s for dinner-5 min walk–our waiter was Grumpy. Suppose to rain tomorrow.
